I was given the chance to cover the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou for Maldives Olympic Committee. It was a great experience to cover the tournament with some of the best sports photographers from all over the world. Got some great tips and advice from them as well. Thanks to everyone of them.

In terms of success, Maldivian teams did not win a medal, but in some of the events, Maldivian players reached to a better level compared to their previous tournaments. Maldives Women Volleyball team won their first match since 2006 against Tajikistan and won the 10th position, one position lower than India. Maldives Tables Tennis player, Mueena Mohammed qualified to the best 16’s round after beating Nepal’s Renuka by 4 – 1. It was the first time in Maldives Table Tennis qualified to that level. Maldivian Chess players also won numerous single matches and was close to a semi final spot.  It was the first time Maldives participated in the Chess event.  Maldives Women basketball team in it’s first International tournament suffered huge defeats. They lost to Japan by 19 – 143 points.  It was the biggest defeat ever in the South Asian women’s basketball event.  Maldivian cricket and football also had a bad tournament. Maldives cricket team lost all their matches, while Football team was knocked out of the first round with only 2 points.

Maldivian players also participated in swimming, shooting, badminton and billiards.
