Maldivian half marathon

leave a comment »

Got my self up early in the morning to cover the Maldivian half marathon. Four rounds around Male’ was an exhausting race, not just for the runners, for me as well. Was roaming around the city in my motor bike, circling around the police who was escorting the runners. Congratulations Shifaz who finished the men’s category in 1hr 27 mins and Haleemath Ali who finished the women’s category in 2hrs 1 min.

It has been a long time since I managed to update the blog. Have been busy with office work and hence, did not get much time for Photojournalism work. Here’s some of the shots of August 2nd, 2012. 23 December Protests

with one comment

Thousands in the Maldives protested Friday, calling on the government to halt what they called “anti-Islamic” activities near Tsunami Monument. A pro-government protest, led by the president of Maldives Mohammed Nasheed was also held few meters from the mass protest calling for moderate Islamic values in the Maldives.

“We can’t achieve development by going backwards to the Stone Age or being ignorant,” he said.

“Should we ban music? Should we mutilate girls’ genitals? Should we allow 9 year-olds to be married? Should we forbid art and drawing? Should we be allowed to take concubines? Is this nation building?” he asked.

The organizers of the mass protest demanded from the government to stop Israel flights to operate to the Maldives, to stop the sale of alcohol in the islands, shut down brothels operating in the guise of massage parlors and demolish monuments gifted by other countries marking a South Asian summit last month because they see them as idols and asked the president to condemn the remarks made by United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay regarding public flogging of women.

The organizers warned that if the government fails to meet their demands, they would face the consequences.
