2012: The moments that made history

with one comment

I would like to wish everyone a happy new year 2013. Here are some of the moments that made history in the Maldives in 2012. It was a year full of incidents which made Maldives appear in the global media. Some of those events are unfortunate.

I don’t expect 2013 to be any different. With elections in 2013 I believe it would be full of events which would change the history yet again! I hope 2013 will be a year where everyone would think of the nation first before putting forward their own personal agenda. I hope politicians will think of the ordinary citizens before they make their choices.

I wish everyone a prosperous 2013!

Assassination of law maker Afraasheem

leave a comment »

I have never ever met Dr. Afrasheem in person. But he is a very important person for a lot of people in the Maldives. He is an intellectual; a mentor for many students; a law maker; a father of three children. He should not be assassinated, like many other people who have been killed in the last few years.

Our society has become a victim of power struggle. The power struggle does not care for the circumstances of their action. The recent report regarding the gang violence, also highlights the main reasons behind the increase in violence in this country of population less than 350,000.

I wish Maldives would be again labeled as the peaceful heaven on earth rather than the recent news headlines in the world.

Photos in International Newspapers

Twenty Eleven was a successful year for me interms of my contribution in covering Maldives to Associated Press. I am including some of the snap shots of the photos posted in some of the international papers. One of the biggest success was the inclusion of the picture of the DRP led protest against price hikes in the Largest crack down of protests in Washington post.

Photo journalism has been a new thing for me and thanks to Gemunu and Erranga from Associated Press for the guidance. I also thank the photo editors in the photo desk in New Delhi for their help 😀

MDP protest outside JSC

leave a comment »

MDP supporters protested outside the JSC asking the police to arrest the president of JSC Fahmy to be arrested. They also called the resignation of Dr. Latheef and Dr. Afraasheem. Police repeatedly asked the supporters to move away from the JSC area and then used force to arrest some of the leading MDP activists. They were released later without any charge.
